Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel & Fernando Alonso doing doughnuts together in 2018

The 2018 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix capped off another thrilling Formula One season in the pinnacle of motorsport, with it being a landmark race.

Lewis Hamilton won the race after already clinching his fifth World Crown earlier in the 2018 season, moving past Sebastian Vettel who remained on four titles. It was the first time we’d ever seen two quadruple world champions battle it out for a coveted fifth title.

He secured the title in round 19 at the Mexican Grand Prix, leaving the last two races irrelevant to him, but in true champion style, he won the final two races, including the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix which left us with iconic scenes.

Not only did it cap off a historic season between two of the greatest drivers of all time, but it was Fernando Alonso’s last race before retiring from the sport as a two-time world champion.

He would however make a return to the sport in 2021 to join Alpine as Esteban Ocon’s teammate, helping the team massively with his experience.

However, 2018 was seen, at the time, as the potential end of his career. So Hamilton, Vettel and Alonso all performed doughnuts at the end of the race on the main straight, with three great rivals and drivers sharing a magical moment together once again.

Fast forward to 2022 and it’s a similar scenario. All three legends are still driving and are the only drivers from before the 2010s to still be competing.

This time, it’s Vettel who is hanging his helmet up, bringing the curtain down on his glittering, illustrious, record-breaking career.

Many drivers can only dream of achieving what Vettel has done in the sport, with his good friend Hamilton still on the grid with him along with Alonso, we hope we see them doghnut once again before Vettel moves onto pastures new.
