Let us know whether you think people should need ID to vote

The government looks set to continue with plans to roll out a new voter ID system, despite a low uptake from people eligible to receive the newly introduced form of identification.

Legislation passed in April of last year that will require people to produce a form of photographic ID in order to vote, with the new rules set to impact local elections this year.

In order to help the estimated two million people without a form of valid ID, the government has introduced a scheme to allow these people to sign up for a Voter Authority Certificate. However, limited uptake of around one percent of people eligible has seen only 21,300 sign up so far.

The new law has seen push back from Labour with the party saying the introduction is "risking widespread disenfranchisement", and deputy leader Angela Rayner warning that it would "lock people out of democracy".

The last general election saw more than 30 million turn out to vote, with only 525 cases of alleged voter fraud and just four leading to a conviction.
