Darren Fletcher names biggest Manchester United regret

Darren Fletcher has singled out his dismissal in the 2008/2009 Champions League semi-final as the one game he would like to replay.

Fletcher celebrated 20 years since his United debut on Sunday, two decades after starting in a Champions League second group stage game against Basel - a 1-1 draw in which Gary Neville scored for the Reds. Another 341 appearances would come for the Scot before he eventually left Old Trafford in 2015.

And asked which of those he would like to go back and play again, Fletcher didn't hesitate in admitting his regret at being sent off in the second-leg of United's semi-final against Arsenal in 2009. Sir Alex Ferguson's side were 3-0 up on the night and 4-0 up on aggregate, when the midfielder was harshly pulled up for a foul on Cesc Fabregas.

Despite seeming to get the ball, referee Roberto Rosetti deemed it to be the denial of a goalscoring opportunity and sent him off, meaning he was suspended for the final in Rome and eventual defeat against Barcelona.

“The red card against Arsenal in the semi-final,” he told United's in-house media. “I will debate, at 4-0 up [on aggregate], whether I should make the tackle or not, but I played every minute of every game at full intensity, trying to do the best I can for the team.

“I still maintain it is a great tackle, but hindsight is a wonderful thing and if there was ever a moment I should have let somebody score, it might have been that one.”

Fletcher's energy in midfield was sorely missed that evening as Pep Guardiola's side overloaded the middle of the pitch and dominate the ball. Goals from Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi secured the famous trophy for the Spanish giants on the evening.
