Leon King relishing Rangers opportunity as defender reveals pride over gritty Motherwell win

Teenager Leon King insists he's loving being part of the Rangers backline after helping his side battle to a 2-1 win against Motherwell.

The 18-year-old centre back has been thrust into action with Connor Goldson, John Souttar and Felip Helander all currently unavailable to boss Gio van Bronckhorst. The prospect put in an assured performance at Fir Park, although was at the centre of a spot of controversy with Motherwell boss Steven Hammell insisting he should have seen red for a late tackle on Stuart McKinstry.

King only received a yellow card, with the youngster delighted to help his side recover from their bruising defeat to Liverpool in midweek to pick up three vital Premiership points. King told Rangers TV: “We’ve had a tough week and had to come here and bounce back from a tough defeat, it wasn’t pretty at times, but we got the job done and got all three points. I know I am the younger one in the team but I’m proud of the players today, we stood up and were counted and got the win at the end of the day.

"It’s amazing (to get the start) but I need to just keep my head down and keep going and listen and learn from the coaching staff every day. Other than the game in midweek, that’s the first time that I have played alongside Ben (Davies) in a Scottish Premiership game. It was good and hopefully we can continue it and build something together.

“It’s amazing to get four wins in a row but that’s what you need to do at a club like Rangers and that’s what we need to do for the club and the fans especially.”
