Steven Hammell in Motherwell fan call as Rangers flashpoint earns 'respectful' plea ahead of Celtic

Steven Hammell has appealed to Motherwell fans to behave in the Premier Sports Cup clash with Celtic after the club launched a probe into missiles thrown at Rangers stars on Sunday.

A 15-year-old has already been handed an indefinite ban by the club after being identified as one of the culprits. Motherwel l security officials are working with Police Scotland to try and weed out any others after vapes were thrown at Rangers stars during the Ibrox side’s 2-1 win. Asked if the onus was on fans to keep a lid on things, Hammell said: “Absolutely.

"Conduct yourselves in a respectful manner when you’re here. We need the fans onside. we need them to come in their numbers and bring the noise. We need their help. You see the home advantage for the opposition and how they use it. We are similar." Meanwhile Hammell stands by his claim Leon King should have seen red for a challenge on Stuart McKinstry.

The Rangers defender won’t be hit with a retrospective SFA ban. But Hammell said: “Looking back at it, it's a high tackle, it's at force.

“The tackle in isolation is pretty much what we were shown at the start of the season when the referees come in. It’s pretty much an identical tackle to the one we were shown which we were informed was a red card.

“You see Stuart’s knee buckles inside – he catches him high and with force. There’s no hard feelings about it, that’s just my opinion.”
