Leon Goretzka to Manchester United transfer would raise questions

Manchester United’s rebuild under Erik ten Hag took major steps this summer with the additions of Andre Onana, Mason Mount and now Rasmus Hojlund.

It remains to be seen if more arrivals follow that trio through the door with Hojlund's arrival set to be announced this weekend. United are exploring the possibility of adding another midfielder with Sofran Amrabat strongly linked.

Another name in the frame is Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka. The German has been the subject of intense transfer speculation this summer given Thomas Tuchel has added Konrad Laimer from RB Leipzig.

Goretzka’s future is anything but certain and has diminished since the departure of former sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic. Joshua Kimmich is seemingly sure of a spot in the midfield while Ryan Gravenberch could be given more minutes while Laimer will likely be first choice, leaving Goretzka out in the cold ahead of a European Championship with Germany next summer.

At first glance United don't overly need another midfielder given Casemiro, Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen form a solid quartet while Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek are other senior options, albeit all three may well have long-term futures away from Old Trafford. Kobbie Mainoo made a serious impression during pre-season but picked up an unfortunate injury and faces a spell on the sidelines.

Goretzka would offer an upgrade on McTominay, for instance. The German can match any player physically and is deceptively quick, key in a United midfield that will press under Ten Hag.
