Leighton Clarkson on 'horrible' Aberdeen scenario as loanee looks to leave Hearts behind in Europa League race

Leighton Clarkson says a slip-up against “horrible” St Mirren isn’t an option as Aberdeen seek to nail down third spot at long last.

The Buddies head to Pittodrie on Wednesday after Hearts cut the Dons’ cushion to two points. Midfielder Clarkson said: “I just want it done as soon as possible. We wanted to go to Hearts and win, we wanted to beat Hibs. It wasn’t meant to be but hopefully against St Mirren we can get it over the line at our place. St Mirren are a really good team and horrible to play against. They will be set up probably defensively to try to stop us playing. It is a cup final and we need to win it.”

The on-loan Liverpool youngster has backed the Red Army to play their part. He added: “I remember saying with Liam Scales’ goal (against Rangers), the crowd got that one over the line. I hope as many people come to the game as possible as we are going to need every single one of them. It is our job to get it over the line.”

Injuries and illness limited the Dons, albeit captain Graeme Shinnie is back from a ban while Duk and Ross McCrorie could feature. Clarkson, who dubbed Marley Watkins “brilliant” in Duk’s absence, added: “They’re three key players, so hopefully we can get them back in the squad.”
