Leigh Wood lands absolutely terrifying KO on Michael Conlan
Leigh Wood landed a terrifying KO on Michael Conlan last night to retain his WBA featherweight title in Nottingham.
His celebrations, however, were muted as concern quickly grew for Conlan who had fallen backwards through the ropes in the process of being knocked out.
With both fighters tiring in the last round of the bout, Wood summoned all the energy he had left to go on the attack, back Conlan up against the ropes and exact the telling blow.
Conlan doubled over, clearly already out for the count before he fell backwards through the ropes and into the raft of photographers stationed at ringside.
It truly was an awful looking moment that could’ve seen Conlan very badly injured but, fortunately, it looks as though he is going to be fine.
Wood himself said he couldn’t bring himself to celebrate until he knew if Conlan was okay, quickly noticing that it was a very heavy fall.
“I just hope Michael is all right; I can’t celebrate until I know he is,” Wood said to the broadcaster, DAZN.
“He is so tough and it was a bad knockout so I just want to see he is all right.”
Belfast born Conlan was rushed to hospital and immediately for CT scans before posting an encouraging update online.
