Carles Gil: MLS MVP in epic rant after New England forced to play in heavy snow

As a game typically played predominantly in autumn and winter, it is inevitable that some football matches are contested in weather that is less than ideal. However, reigning MLS MVP Carles Gil couldn’t hide his disgust at the conditions his New England Revolution side were forced to play in during their home game with Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

The 29-year-old Spaniard – who made 34 appearances for Aston Villa between 2014 and 2017 – went on a furious rant over having to play in heavy snow at Gillette Stadium.

To be fair, Gil’s mood probably wasn’t helped by having just watched his team surrender a two-goal lead in the final 12 minutes of the match to fall to a 3-2 defeat – and he held nothing back as he raged about conditions in his post-match interview.

“It’s impossible to play football today,” the Revolution skipper insisted passionately when quizzed by local media about his side’s capitulation.

“I cannot talk with my teammates, I cannot run, I cannot do anything. It’s impossible, this is not football. Stop the f****** game. We play tomorrow or any other day, I don’t care. This is not football, it’s impossible. Try to make long balls, the wind, it’s impossible. I don’t understand nothing.”

“If we finish the game 2-0, I say here the same,” Gil said. “It’s not football, it’s impossible to play like this. Congratulations to Real Salt Lake because they are amazing players, you know. But I don’t understand why we play today like we play. We lose one game because we lose a game, for us, for them, for the soccer, for the fans, for everything.”
