Leigh Wood vs Michael Conlan 2: Eddie Hearn teases rematch

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed that a rematch between Leigh Wood and Michael Conlan is a possibility this year.

Earlier this month at Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham, hometown hero Leigh Wood put his WBA featherweight title on the line when he fought Irish star Michael Conlan.

The fight wasn’t on the radar of casual boxing fans but hardcores knew this one had the potential to be an absolute corker. In the end, that’s precisely what we saw as Wood and Conlan went to war in front of a truly incredible crowd.

The back and forth affair can only be described as a classic with the judges actually having the challenger, Conlan, up on the scorecards heading into the final round.

Then, in a true Rocky moment, Wood summoned the courage to battle back and knock Conlan out cold with less than two minutes to go.

Eddie Hearn was one of many who watched on in amazement and during a recent conversation with Boxing Scene, he didn’t rule out the idea of a rematch.

“All Leigh Wood wants to do is fight at the City Ground,” Hearn said. “So, what are the fights? Kiko Martinez? Maybe. Josh Warrington? Absolutely, although he might want it at Elland Road, so it is a toss-up. Michael Conlan rematch? Absolutely. Santa Cruz? Yes. He has got options. 

“The rematch might be the biggest fight. It was an epic fight, but he has got options now and it will be up to him and Ben and everyone to make the decision.  

“Generally, you get the opportunity to do it (at a football ground) in July, which gives him another three or four weeks off. He has had two, is that enough?
