Leicester City transfer target Ademola Lookman helps Nigeria set new record

Ademola Lookman scored his maiden international goal as Nigeria recorded the biggest win in their history in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

The winger, who spent the last season on loan at Leicester City and remains a transfer target this summer, scored the seventh goal of a 10-0 rout by the Super Eagles over Sao Tome and Principe. The result eclipses a 10-1 win for Nigeria over Benin in 1959 that had stood as their record.

Nigeria were only leading 3-0 at the break, but scored five in the 20-minute at the start of the second half to set themselves on their way to the record, which was sealed when Watford forward Emmanuel Dennis scored an injury-time penalty.

Lookman, earning his fourth cap since changing allegiance from England at the start of the year, also set up the second of four goals for striker Victor Osimhen, who scored twice for Napoli against City in the Europa League last season.

With Wilfred Ndidi injured and Kelechi Iheanacho not selected, there were no permanent City players in the Nigeria side, but Lookman could become one this summer. There was an option to buy in his loan deal at £14m, and it is something City are considering, but it seems their focus is on other transfers first.

Lookman is seen as someone who can provide competition for Harvey Barnes on the left wing at City, with the club also hoping to bring in a player to start on the right-hand side. During his campaign at the King Power Stadium, Lookman scored eight goals and provided five assists.
