Leicester City aiming to do what Man United can't to disprove Jonny Evans theory

Jonny Evans is gunning to win his second major trophy with Leicester City – something he thought would never happen after leaving Manchester United.

The City centre-back is expected to line up in the defence at Roma’s Stadio Olimpico on Thursday night with the club one win away from a place in the Europa Conference League final. If they get to Albania, City could then lift their second piece of major silverware in two years, following last season’s FA Cup triumph.

Having played in Premier League and Champions League-winning campaigns before his Old Trafford exit in 2015, Evans has recounted a time when it struck him that his opportunities to win trophies had likely dried up.

However, he’s thankful that City have proven that wrong. And it may be all the sweeter that United themselves haven't won a trophy since Evans moved to the King Power Stadium in 2018.

“It is a really tough thing to come by, silverware,” he said from City’s Seagrave training base on Tuesday. “Some players never get the chance to win things. We have been very lucky and fortunate.

“I am so grateful that I have been able to win a few things in my career. That is something you can always look back on.

“You sort of think those opportunities are gone (after leaving United). Myself and Darren Fletcher at the time, we used to drive down from Manchester to West Brom and talk about that. The chances of winning cup competitions are really difficult.

“We knew the difference in opportunities. You probably don’t realise it at the time when you are at such a big club. Whenever you leave a club like Manchester United you realise your opportunities are going to be limited.
