Leicester: £50m star 'will have opportunity' to leave King Power Stadium

Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison will have ‘an opportunity’ to move on next summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 25-year-old was heavily linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium throughout the previous transfer window but ended up staying up.

Newcastle United reportedly saw two bids rejected by Leicester for Maddison, with the second one totalling £50 million, of which £5m would have arrived in potential add-ons.

However, the Foxes value the one-cap England international at £60m and were unwilling to compromise on that figure, forcing Newcastle to turn their attention to alternative targets.

And the Magpies weren’t the only Premier League side eager to prise Maddison away from the Midlands as Tottenham Hotspur were also credited with an interest in his services.

Leicester were able to cling onto their prized asset over the summer, but his current contract is due to expire in 2024, leaving them in a delicate position.

If Maddison doesn’t put pen to paper on fresh terms soon, then Brendan Rodgers’ charges may be forced to offload the playmaker or risk him departing as a free agent.

Jones believes Maddison has just got to ‘get on with this season’ in the knowledge that a lucrative move away could be just around the corner.

He told GiveMeSport: “We also need to see whether Rodgers can keep his head above water in the coming weeks and how much further upheaval there might even be in the backroom.

“So, James Maddison has just kind of got to get on with this season, knowing that at the end of the season, there probably will be an opportunity for him to go.”

Maddison enjoyed the most productive season of his senior career last time out, registering 18 goals and 12 assists in 53 appearances
