Leeds United are in “pole position” to sign RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson in the summer transfer window.

Reports back in the January transfer window suggested that the Whites had a bid rejected for the USA international, and it appears their interest in him has not gone away.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, the Yorkshire club are at the front of the queue in the race to sign Aaronson, and that the midfielder himself is open to a move to England.

He said: “He’s obviously interested in a move to the Premier League. Leeds are probably in pole position, right now, to get it done. A lot will depend on Premier League survival.”

Indeed, in a sparkling performance against Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash, Aaronson created a whopping five chances for his teammates, becoming the youngest player to do so since Lionel Messi back in 2008.

And, after watching that display, Arsenal icon Thierry Henry raved about the £18m-rated star and what he saw from him in his time managing in the MLS with Montreal CF.

The Frenchman said: “I came across him when I was a coach with Montreal, and he killed us with Philadelphia Union. His activity, the way he sees the game. I’ve always been a big fan of him and I’m not surprised to see what he’s doing right now with Salzburg.

“He’s contagious. The way he plays, his energy. His intensity is second to none. He supports the team. He’s a good player. I always thought he was going to be a player. He’s still learning.”

Given his ability to play in central midfield but also further forward, Aaronson has the kind of engine and crucially, the end product – he’s bagged five goals and provided ten assists this season – to be a real game-changer for Leeds.
