Leeds: £45m star's Elland Road exit could create 'backlash'

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is unlikely to move to Manchester United this summer due to the backlash he would receive from supporters, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Phillips has come through the youth system at Elland Road, and made 228 appearances for the senior team, but he could be set for a big-money departure from the club in the coming months.

Phillips still has over two years remaining on his current deal at Leeds, and the Premier League outfit want him to sign a new contract to extend his stay even further.

There is plenty of interest in the 19-cap international from elsewhere, though. Aston Villa and Newcastle have been linked with the holding midfielder in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that people behind the scenes at Old Trafford are trying to work on a deal to bring the £45m-rated star to United.

Jones has suggested Phillips would be a good signing for United, but thinks the 26-year-old is unlikely to go through with the transfer due to the bitter rivalry that exists between the two clubs.

He believes Phillips pushing for a move to the red side of Manchester would be comparable to Harry Kane wanting to leave Tottenham last summer.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones said: “I think Kalvin Phillips could fit in at Man United, I just don’t see it happening because I think there’ll be uproar, and I don’t think that Kalvin Phillips is likely to rock the boat.

“I guess the closest comparison we could make to a player leaving would be Harry Kane when he threatened to leave Tottenham or looked like he was leaving Tottenham. The backlash that there was to him then, you would be risking something like that.”
