Lee Carsley set to be in charge of England for Ireland game

Former Republic of Ireland international Lee Carsley looks set to be in charge of England's senior team when they travel to the Aviva Stadium for next month’s UEFA Nations League clash with Ireland.

Carsley, currently England Under-21 manager, is poised to step into the England hotseat on an interim basis, according to a report from the BBC.

The English FA have yet to appoint a successor to Gareth Southgate, who stepped down after leading England to the final of Euro 2024, where they lost to Spain.

Given that Southgate was promoted from the Under-21 managerial role, initially on a temporary basis, after Sam Allardyce resigned in 2016, Carsley will be looking to impress in September’s games with both Ireland and Finland.

Carsley had been a target for FAI, who held talks with him over becoming the new permanent manager of the Republic of Ireland, following the exit of Stephen Kenny.

The 50-year-old confirmed he had a meeting with representatives from the FAI last November but that talks had gone no further.

He then committed his future to the England Under-21 set-up, having previously led them to victory in the Under-21 European Championship last summer.

Carsley’s appointment would add extra spice to September’s game in Dublin as Heimir Hallgrímsson begins his reign as the new Ireland boss.

Hallgrímsson has history with England, having overseen their shock exit from Euro 2016 as joint head coach of Iceland.
