League One play-off scenarios facing Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland and Co ahead of final day

It was never in doubt, was it? Sheffield Wednesday showed bags of character and spirit to fight back and beat relegation-haunted Fleetwood Town 3-2 in a thrilling clash at Highbury Stadium last night.

A superb Lee Gregory hat-trick ensured the Owls returned to winning ways. The result leaves them in prime position to finish in the League One play-offs. Wednesday are in fourth place on 82 points, one ahead of Sunderland in fifth, two ahead of Plymouth Argyle in sixth position, and two in front of seventh-placed Wycombe.

But they are not guaranteed a spot in the play-offs just yet. As Darren Moore was keen to stress after the Fleetwood thriller, there is still a job to be completed.

Moore said: "Going into the final game of the season at home, we know there is a lot of work to do. We are not patting ourselves on the back. We have worked extremely hard to get to this point in the season.

"We still have a massive test ahead of us on Saturday. Portsmouth are a team that are capable and will come to enjoy the day. We have got to make sure we apply ourselves right and it will be another big test for us at Hillsborough."

It is in Wednesday's hands. A win over Pompey will seal fourth place and guarantee they would be at home in the second leg of the play-off semi-finals.

If the Owls draw on the final day, a point could be enough depending on results elsewhere. They would be relying on Sunderland, Plymouth and Wycombe dropping points. The Black Cats and the Chairboys travel to Morecambe and Burton Albion respectively while the Pilgrims entertain automatic promotion hopefuls Milton Keynes Dons. Sunderland missed the chance to secure a top-six finish after drawing 1-1 with Rotherham United yesterday.
