Lawrence Shankland taunt caught by Celtic TV as £11m Engels rubber ears dark arts to silence Hearts skipper

Hearts skipper Lawrence Shankland tried in vein to put off ice-cool Arne Engels as shouted in his hear seconds before his first goal for Celtic.

The record £11m signing Augsburg was as good as advertised against the Jambos and showed his quality with the shimmy before his perfect penalty which left Craig Gordon with no chance. And Engels finished with aplomb and managed to give Shankland, and others, the rubber ear – with Celtic TV's unique angle picking up the Jambos captain shouting "big pressure" with another blaring "£10m? aye right", in relation to Engels' fee, the second biggest in Scottish football history and the largest since Tore Andre Flo 24 years ago.

Hearts were left miffed by their own penalty being overturned by VAR as Steven Naismith's beleaguered trips remain marooned to the foot of the Premiership table. Celtic made it five consecutive wins to start the league season and Rodgers was left beaming with by his side's intent before they kick off their Champions League campaign vs Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday.

Rodgers – speaking after the win – said: "The bread and butter (the league), we can never forget that because it's so important. That’s about the lives of so many supporters, especially here in Glasgow for their team. So we can never discount that or think it's easy. People say it's easy, playing for or managing Celtic. But I can assure you it’s not. Because of the demand, the expectation and the mentality that you need to succeed. Thankfully we have a winning culture here.

“But it’s about taking the next steps. And the next step is probably in Europe. At the very highest level, it’s been a real challenge for us."
