Last gasp goal earns Annan Athletic point against Dumbarton

A last gasp goal from Paul McGowan earned a valuable point for Annan against 10-man Sons.

He struck two minutes into stoppage time to salvage the draw for the Galabankies who now have seven points from six games in League One.

Dumbarton took an early lead through James Hilton who fastened on to Carlo Pignatiello’s long ball and lifted a delicate shot over keeper Jamie Smith in 10 minutes.

But Sons had keeper Brett Long red carded for rushing out of his box and taking down Galabankies’ Luca Ross.

He was replaced by kid keeper Luke Smallwood aged just 16 who was making his debut for the Sons and pulled off a handful of decent saves including a top drawer stop from Aidan Smith from close range.

McGowan netted in 92 minutes to clinch a late point and arrest Galabankies’ poor run of league games with three defeats in a row.

Player boss Wullie Gibson said he was relieved to gain a point and added: “In the end, you have to take a point.

“Even with 10 men they were hard to break down and we didn’t take enough of our chances.

“I have got to give some credit to the players who kept on going and finally got a goal at the end. Maybe if the game had gone another five minutes we could have pushed on from that.

“We are now three points off top, but four points off the bottom.

“Now we look forward to the tough trip up to Arbroath.”
