Lampard in hot water with the FA after dubious Liverpool comments come back to bite

Frank Lampard has been contacted by the FA after the Everton boss’ comments regarding an Anthony Gordon penalty appeal came back to bite.

Everton fought hard, yet ultimately made the short trip home from Anfield without a point on Sunday. The defeat cemented their place inside the relegation zone after Burnley had leapfrogged them via a 1-0 victory over Wolves earlier in the afternoon.

Everton’s spoiling and defensive tactics were clear for all to see. Though that was not to say they weren’t effective and had their forwards been clinical, the Toffees could’ve produced a shock.

Anthony Gordon in particular was a livewire down the left. The young winger twice saw penalty appeals waved away when taking a tumble inside the area.

Gordon was booked for simulation in the first instance, though the second incident involving Joel Matip was more contentious.

Yet referee Stuart Attwell did not deem the contact enough to warrant a penalty. VAR Darren England concurred with Attwell’s on-field assessment.

In the post-match fallout, Lampard suggested the decision may have been different if involving Mohamed Salah at the other end. Lampard also hinted Liverpool’s influence while playing at Anfield may have affected the referee’s judgement.

“If it is Mo Salah at the other end, you get a penalty,” said Lampard (via the Daily Mail). “I have played in teams in the top half of the league, you get them.”

In his interview with Sky Sports, Lampard said: “I’m not sure how clear-cut it was but the referee was quick to whip out a yellow card (for Gordon’s first penalty appeal with Naby Keita).
