Lagos set for 2023 Southwest gymnastics championship

Lagos National Stadium

More than 59 athletes have been listed for the Southwest Gymnastics Championships, which holds at the National Stadium, Lagos, from April 25 to 27, 2023, the organisers have said.

According to them, the three-day championships will feature gymnasts from five of the states that make up the region, including Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo and hosts, Lagos State. They will compete in the eight to 15 years’ age category and 16 to 18 years class.

Speaking on the championship, chairperson of the Southwest Gymnastics Association, Dr. Omowunmi Olalere, whose foundation is powering the event, expressed gratitude to Numero Group and Dozen Price Supermarket, for sponsoring the competition, adding, “this would be the first of its kind to be hosted in the region, hence my excitement.”

She noted that the programme would create awareness and galvanise Southwest youths’ interest in the sport and also prepare them for future competitions.

Olalere said the region had lagged behind other zones competition wise, hence her decision to organise the championship to arrest the situation.

“As the chairperson, it is my resolve to change the narrative by developing and popularising gymnastics within the Southwest.

That influenced my decision to accept the Southwest Chairperson position in the first place.

“I plead with all stakeholders in the Southwest to join me in this crusade so that together we can change the narrative,” she said.
