Kylian Mbappe following Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane into Liverpool transfer infamy
Liverpool have made it clear for some time they were unlikely to make any major signings during this month's transfer window.
But as the clock ticks down on deadline day on Monday, that hasn't stopped supporters having hope of a new face walking through the door.
And it certainly hasn't prevented the rumour mill from whirring away at nothing less than top speed.
We’re all guilty of playing the game, becoming excited at the suggestion your club could be in for a big-name player and then disappointed when it doesn’t happen.
Often, it was never, ever going to happen.
On a number of occasions, though, it later emerged the rumoured transfer became surprisingly close to being realised.
Here we chronicle some of the infamous moves involving Liverpool that, for whatever reasons, didn’t transpire. Or haven't. Yet.
There's no doubt Kylian Mbappe is one of the best players on the planet.
And there's similarly few that can argue the fact the France international knows exactly how to tease and torment supporters desperate for him to join their club.
The forward has previously been effusive in his praise of Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp, prompting excitement among Reds fans and declaration this would be the year Mbappe arrives at Anfield. Well, either this year or next year. Or the next one.
For all that, few would be surprised if he rocks up at Real Madrid in the summer, so strong have the links been with the interestingly-financed Spanish giants.
Mind you, Mbappe still hasn't gone to the Bernabeu, so...
During the 1990s, not a summer would go by without Zinedine Zidane being linked with Liverpool.
This, of course, despite the Reds not having Champions League football. And Zidane's talent being somewhat deserving of such a stage.
Never
