Kris Boyd right to call for VAR but borderline GBH Hearts penalty didn't need it - Ryan Stevenson

I had to laugh when I saw my mate Kris Boyd on Sky having another rant about VAR after Tuesday’s Edinburgh derby.

Listen, I fully agree with him that a league the size and stature of Scottish football with the cash available up here should have TV technology already.

But Don Robertson should not have needed an action replay to spot that Hearts should have been given at least one penalty the other night.

I’ll give you, Lewis Stevenson’s late handball in the box was a tough one to pick out after Alex Cochrane blasted that free-kick at him from point-blank range.

But his first-half barge on Ellis Simms was so blatant it was borderline GBH!

How he missed that is beyond me. He was in a great position to see exactly what had happened but somehow decided it was play-on!

Simms is a big lad and there’s no way wee Louis - who is about half the size of him - wipes him out like that if it’s a 50-50 coming together.

VAR should not come into the equation. Everyone inside Easter Road knew that was a penalty but the fact Robertson didn't is just madness to me.

Had he done his job correctly, Lewis would have been sent off for a second yellow, Hearts would have had a free shot at going one-up and you’d be talking
