Kris Boyd bristles at Rangers budget question as he flips the script and claims 'Ange has spent a fortune'

Irked Kris Boyd has shut down talk that Rangers should be winning more trophies because of their "budget" - as he pointed to Celtic's spending power as a defence.

Michael Beale will not claim a trophy during his first season as Ibrox boss as the Londoner's winless run against Ange Postecoglou's men was extended to four games in the bruising Scottish Cup semi-final defeat. With Celtic holding a whopping 13 point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership, just one more win will see the title remain in Glasgow's east end after already lifting the Viaplay Cup this term.

Despite the gulf between the Glasgow giants this term, Boyd insisted the season has turned out the way it should have if people are talking about the finances between the clubs. He insisted Postecoglou has "spent a fortune" to take Celtic to the brink of a treble winning campaign.

Asked on Sky Sports how disappointing the season was for a club the size of Rangers and with their budget to finish without a trophy, Boyd said: "You can point to budgets; if that is the case then the way the season has panned out is the correct one.

"Celtic have got by far the biggest budget in the country. I mean, Ange Postecoglou has spent a fortune to a man to get the team he has assembled. So, Celtic have the biggest budget, but that doesn't mean to say you can't beat Celtic. I think you start looking for excuses when you start going after budgets. Rangers, if you go back to winning the league, the recruitment has been way off it. There are no other words."
