Kris Boyd admits Rangers title fear as he insists potential cup double will be NO consolation

Ibrox legend Kris Boyd fears Rangers have let a golden title opportunity slip through their fingers.

Philippe Clement’s Viaplay Cup winners are hoping to end the season with a Hampden double after booking a place in next month’s Scottish Cup Final. But former Gers striker Boyd insists that will be scant consolation if his old side miss out on a title triumph. New boss Clement worked wonders to propel the Lights Blues back into the Premiership scrap having inherited a team seven-points adrift when he replaced Michael Beale back in October.

But all that hard work was undone last week as damaging defeats in Dingwall and at Dens Park allowed Celtic to open up a three-point lead heading into the split. Boyd - speaking at his at golf day hosted by his mental health charity - said: “I’ve heard people saying recently ‘you’ve got to remember where Rangers were when Philippe Clement came in’.

“I don’t think you can have that mindset. You’ve got yourself in a place where you can win a title.

“It wasn’t to be at Ibrox a couple of weeks ago in the Old Firm, but the two performances after that haven’t been good enough. You can’t go back to where the club was when Philippe Clement arrived.

“He’s here and they got themselves back in a title race, which at this moment in time looks like it’s probably going to end in a whimper. Some clubs get bogged down by winning cups but Rangers are going to be judged by winning titles.

“The fans have got themselves into a position where they could’ve won the league, but with the last three games, Rangers could potentially have thrown a golden opportunity away. It’s not over but it’s going to be very difficult.
