Kolisi, Mapimpi and Schoenmaker nominated for top sport awards honours

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and team-mate Makazole Mapimpi are both up for coveted awards at the South African Sports Awards scheduled for this weekend.

They are joined by Paralympic superstar Ntando Mahlangu and Olympics 200m breaststroke title-holder Tatjana Schoenmaker, among others.

Kolisi, Mahlangu, Schoenmaker, grand prix motorcycle competitor Brad Binder and Olympic surfer Bianca Buitendag are all nominated for the People's Choice Award, which is voted for by the public.

The awards span 16 categories across a variety of sports and administration roles, with Bok try-scoring machine Mapimpi nominated in the Sportsman of the Year category.

The period under review is 1 September 2019 - 31 August 2021.

In the Sports Star of the Year category, the list is a carbon copy of the People's Choice Award with Kolisi, Mahlangu and Schoenmaker up for the award.

"These awards are particularly significant because they recognise the resilience demonstrated by the athletes. In addition, the awards highlight the Olympic year that acknowledges great achievements from our 2019 Olympic and Paralympic participants," the department of sport said.

The 15th edition of the awards ceremony will take place at the Durban International Convention Centre.
