Kobbie Mainoo has given Manchester United a simple £21.5million transfer decision to make

Erik ten Hag said last month that Manchester United will be stronger come January deadline day, but not because of signings.

Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro are already nearing a return while Mason Mount, Harry Maguire and Tyrell Malacia are hoped to be back before February kicks in. Ten Hag has portrayed their comebacks in a sense that likens them to new signings.

However, perhaps his early Christmas gift was the best return of all. Kobbie Mainoo has become so important to United that his withdrawal against Nottingham Forest cost them the game. Both of the goals conceded came in the pocket he was occupying.

Mainoo has started all but two of United’s eight Premier League games since his November return, including all of the last four. He has warranted each appearance and has brought praise from many analysts, including in games that United have been soundly beaten.

It will be a full year on Wednesday since the midfielder made his senior debut and his stock has continually risen despite suffering two injuries over the last 12 months.

Ten Hag laid his cards bare when he decided to pick Mainoo over Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek against Real Madrid in pre-season as Mount was moved over to the right flank. It was a mighty shame he suffered injury just two minutes in.

Ten Hag is clearly a big fan of the youngster, as he seemingly is of Sofyan Amrabat. The Dutchman was determined to land him in the summer and his season-long loan has cost United €10m (£8.6m). They have the option to make the move permanent in the summer for €20m (£17.2m) plus €5m (£4.3m) in add-ons.
