Kickstart a career in Biomedical Science with the University of Salford

There is a growing need for skilled people to join the Biomedical Science workforce - however there are often gaps in knowledge, skills, and experience of graduates.

This is something higher education institutions like the University of Salford and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) are looking to address. By collaborating with employers, the university is helping ensure recruitment and retention rates of talented and skilled graduates in the field improves.

The Biomedical Scientist degree apprenticeship programme was developed through consultation with pathology laboratory employers and enables aspiring biomedical scientists to gain practical experience while earning a degree, addressing workforce challenges and fostering future talent in the field.

Lloyd Mcleggon-Watkinson who has worked in the NHS for a decade and is an assistant practitioner (Immunology) apprentice in his second year, received a ‘Rising Star’ award from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

A former phlebotomist, he moved to a microbiology laboratory and became interested in science and healthcare science, which led him to a role with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Reflecting on what he has learnt so far during his apprenticeship, he said: “I'm learning more about myself and how I manage and supervise and gain more of an understanding of the tests I run in the workplace.

“The other part is the opportunities. I like the idea that I can go into learning days or continued professional development days and gain more information, and that feeds back into work, and also helps me have a more solid foundation of knowledge here in university.”
