Khadija Shaw smashes Man City club record with seven WSL games to go

Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw scored two goals against Brighton at the weekend in Manchester City’s 2-1 win to make her the highest-scoring player for the club in a single season, with seven league games still to play.

The 26-year-old is not only the Women's Super League's top scorer with 15 goals in 15 appearances, she has also smashed the previous club record of 24 goals in all competitions, a record previously held by Nikita Parris. Shaw has bested that record by two and now sits on 26 goals for the season.

She told Man City's in-house media: “I just want to help the team as much as possible and keep scoring. That’s my job, that’s my role.

"I didn’t know that [about breaking the record], but that’s special.”

Manager Gareth Taylor hailed his star striker, saying: “I’m super proud of Bunny and all the players are. I think what she’s done is remarkable, really - to go from the first game of the season scoring and not really have a dry spell at all.

“She’s continued to score goals. She’s certainly a proven goalscorer, but it’s the types of goals she’s getting now and everything else she brings to us in the games.

“I think that’s nine in three games now, which is crazy. People probably think there’s an element of luck to that but Bunny does that repeatedly and she’s done that all season.”

To edge past the previous record in the Women’s Super League clash with Brighton, the Jamaican star got her name on the scoresheet in the 21st minute after some clever link-up play with Yui Hasegawa saw Shaw then redirect the ball into the goal with a tap-in from close range.

Her second saw her capitalise on a scramble in the Brighton area, with a sharp left-footed effort rolling into the back of the net to steal the win in the 89th minute after
