Liverpool FC are perfect opponents for Man City to cope without Erling Haaland and Phil Foden

Before the international break, Pep Guardiola said April's fixtures would 'decide' Manchester City's successes this season, and urged his players to build on their 10-game unbeaten run across February and March.

He also challenged his City players to ensure they arrive in May still in contention for the three competitions they remain in - and that will mean beating Liverpool, Bayern Munich (over two legs) and Arsenal realistically, plus the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

It would be a great help to have two of their most in-form players for those games, but Phil Foden is definitely out of the Liverpool game for a start, and other are no guarantees yet that Erling Haaland can recover from his groin injury in time.

On paper, facing old rivals Liverpool without two key forwards is a huge blow, regardless of their form this season. City would be far more confident of beating Jurgen Klopp's side if they had their 42-goal striker and in-form winger.

However, when Guardiola spoke of a productive April, he also hinted at the need to pick up quickly where City left off last month. He urged his players not to get injured and to look after themselves, knowing the hectic schedule coming up.

Haaland and Foden are probably two of the players he would have wanted to stay fit more than most, yet their injuries (or surgery in Foden's case) only highlight why Guardiola was so concerned. Just as he has done before, he will have to make do with the players who do come back fit.

And while the Liverpool game may not be ideal in that respect, there should also be no excuses if City aren't prepared. Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez
