Khabib Nurmagomedov mauled Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 229 on this day in 2018

On this day four years ago, Khabib Nurmagomedov dismantled Conor McGregor in their mammoth UFC 229 main event.

For a long time now, Khabib Nurmagomedov has been widely recognised as one of the best fighters of all time.

The mixed martial arts world witnessed his rise from contender to champion and while he did pick up some fantastic wins over the likes of Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje and Michael Johnson, arguably his finest hour took place at UFC 229 – also known as the biggest MMA event in the history of the sport.

McGregor and Khabib weren’t big fans of one another heading into 2018 but in April of that year, things really kicked up a gear when Conor attacked a bus containing Nurmagomedov and several other fighters after ‘The Eagle’ threatened his close friend and training partner Artem Lobov.

The wild incident eventually led the promotion down the path of booking a titanic UFC lightweight championship clash between McGregor and Khabib, which went down on October 6th 2018.

The first round played out how many would’ve expected with the Russian sensation controlling the tempo in the grappling department, and in the second, Khabib actually managed to drop his Irish rival with a nasty shot that led to a round of complete and utter domination on the ground.

McGregor slowly worked his way back into proceedings on the feet in the third but it wasn’t enough, with Khabib outlasting him into the fourth before securing a neck crank finish to win the contest.

What followed were some ugly scenes after the champion opted to attack McGregor’s corner once the bout had ended, bringing an unbelievable event that drew over 2.4 million
