Kevin Phillips tips Aston Villa to sell Morgan Sanson

Morgan Sanson has found playing time for Aston Villa hard to come by this season, spending most of the campaign on the bench or out of the matchday squad, so it’s not surprising that Steven Gerrard is willing to cash in on his signature this summer.

The 27-year-old has made 11 appearances in all competitions, amassing just 394 minutes of playing time. Sanson has started only one Premier League game since January, so Villa are willing to listen to offers when the transfer window opens.

Gerrard would accept a bid of £10m, but Kevin Phillips believes Villa could end up green-lighting a deal for less as they’ll be desperate to use the transfer money for Phillipe Coutinho’s signing. He told Football Insider: “A club has every right to hold out for their valuation at this stage of the season.

“But as the summer cracks on and people don’t come in for the player – that price will come down. If they need that money to go and do a deal for Coutinho, then Steven will be desperate to get him out of the door. I think Sanson will definitely leave this summer, it’s just a question of when and how much.”

Villa paid £14m to sign Sanson on a four-and-a-half-year deal from Olympique Marseille in January 2021, but he’s only managed to make 20 appearances in 18 months, amassing a paltry 685 minutes of football.

The uncapped Frenchman has found himself behind John McGinn, Jacob Ramsey, Douglas Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba in the pecking order all season, so the writing has been on the wall for some time.
