Kevin De Bruyne 'replacement' release clause to be triggered as Guardiola forces Man City's hand

Kevin De Bruyne's reported replacement at Manchester City Dani Olmo is expected to see his release clause triggered before it expires on Monday, July 15.

De Bruyne has entered the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and his future is in doubt. It is expected the Belgian will remain in Manchester this summer with the player admitting he anticipates a quiet window.

However, his future beyond then is less clear which has led to speculation surrounding who could be in line to replace him. RB Leipzig's Spanish attacking midfielder Olmo has acquired plenty of attention recently thanks to his performances at Euro 2024.

Currently, he has a £50m release clause inserted into his contract but this is due to expire at the beginning of next week. According to the Daily Mirror, clubs from the Premier League and La Liga are lining up to activate his release clause before then.

It is unclear whether City are thought to be interested in activating the release clause in Olmo's contract but the Mirror does add that Chelsea and Liverpool are not the clubs from the Premier League watching this situation unfold. Elsewhere, Sport reports that City could have their arm forced by manager Pep Guardiola regarding the sale of Joao Cancelo.

Guardiola is thought to be insistent the full-back does not rejoin the Blues' squad for pre-season. While City's preference is for Cancelo to move on, they do not want to agree to another loan move.

Two permanent bids have reportedly been received from Al Ahli and Al Ettifaq but Cancelo has not entertained them. Barca could also be in the race but they want a loan move.
