Kenny Miller hits Rangers VAR boiling point on air as John Souttar handball sees conspiracy solution torpedoed

Fuming Kenny Miller has erupted over the decision to awarded a penalty against Rangers during the Europa League clash with Benfica.

And he reckons the John Souttar handball flashpoint should put an end to talk of bringing in match officials from abroad to operate VAR in the Scottish Premiership. Benfica were controversially allowed to level the game at 1-1 through an Angel Di Maria penalty when the Rangers defender was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box following a VAR review.

The centre-back headed the ball down from a corner during the clash - but the ball would connect with his hand in the process of clearing the danger. UEFA rules advise that if the player has knocked the ball onto his own arm the handball should not be punished - however referee Tobias Stieler was sent to review the incident at the pitchside monitor and awarded the spot-kick.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, baffled Miller said: “I am watching this last night and because of the laws and because of the rules I am thinking there is no way that penalty can be given.” Host Gordon Duncan chimed to point to a similar incident during the last 16 fixture card: "Look at the West Ham one in the same competition..."

That only sparked more fury from Miller who went on: “Oh, don’t. It was incredible. It’s a stonewall penalty if Soucek hits it. If it is the defender it hits then it is clear that it’s not a penalty, because of the law, but that is exactly what happened with John Souttar.

"This is why I can’t understand it. You can say in European competitions things might be slightly different - but no, the rules are the rules. If you head it, kick it - whatever it is.
