Keller scores OT winner as U.S. completes comeback against Canada for women's hockey gold
The United States has won the Olympic gold medal in women's hockey with a 2-1 overtime win over Canada.
Megan Keller scored the winner 4:07 into overtime.
U.S. captain Hilary Knight tied the game with 2:04 left in the third period. Goaltender Aerin Frankel made 30 saves in the victory.
Canada's Kristen O'Neill scored a shorthanded goal in the second period and goalie Ann-Renee Desbiens stopped 31 shots
The game was the seventh time that Canada and the U.S. have clashed for Olympic women's hockey gold.
And it was yet another tight tug of war for the crown between the archrivals in front of a packed Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena.
Canada's captain Marie-Philip Poulin played on a suspect knee that kept her out of two games, including an earlier loss to the U.S. in the preliminary round. Canadian defender Claire Thompson played through an upper-body injury Thursday.
Canada outshot the Americans 29-28 after three periods and led 1-0 after two. American forward Britta Curl was called for boarding with six minutes 23 seconds left in the third when she checked defender Erin Ambrose into the boards behind the Canadian net, but the U.S. killed that penalty.
The U.S. won an offensive zone draw to give Frankel time to leave her net for an extra attacker.
Knight in her final Olympic game tipped in a Laila Edwards shot from the point with just over two minutes remaining in the third.
Because would it really be a Canada vs US final if it didn’t go into OT
