Keith Downie: Newcastle in talks to sign £35m “boy wonder”, he'd be Howe’s Richarlison - opinion

An update has emerged on Newcastle United’s interest in Anthony Gordon in the summer transfer window… 

Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has revealed that the Magpies are in talks with Everton over a deal to sign the £35m winger, although no official offer has been made of yet.

Unfortunately, a move does feel unlikely according to Downie with the Toffees not looking to sell the young forward this summer.

By snapping up a deal to sign the England U21 international, Newcastle could land their head coach his own version of Richarlison.

The Brazilian forward recently signed for Tottenham in a deal worth up to £60m and the Magpies can now secure the next version of the former Watford man, as Gordon trained and played alongside him at Goodison Park.

Both players are right-footed attackers who like to play off the left, but can also play centrally, and this suggests that the Englishman has a similar style of play to the new Spurs signing. He may have been learning from Richarlison in training and taking tips on how to get the better of defenders from the wide left position.

At the age of 21, Gordon has plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and fulfil his potential to reach a point where he is scoring 10+ Premier League goals – just like the Brazil international did last term.

The £2.5k-per-week gem was once described as a “boy wonder” by former Everton striker Victor Anichebe and his record at youth level suggests that the scope is there for him to grow into a top player.
