Kate Garraway's incredible battle to keep husband Derek Draper alive amid constant fear of losing him

Kate Garraway announced the heartbreaking news that her husband Derek Draper died on January 5, following a long-term battle with coronavirus symptoms. The former lobbyist and political advisor died aged 56 after he suffered a cardiac arrest in December, which left him in a critical condition.

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate revealed the news on Instagram and said: “I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away. As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications.

“Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed.” She added: “Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life.”

She also wrote two books, The Power Of Hope and The Strength Of Love: Embracing An Uncertain Future With Resilience And Optimism.

Soon after contracting coronavirus, Derek was rushed to hospital and was admitted to intensive care in April. He was placed into a medically-induced coma as his condition deteriorated and he did not wake from it until October 2020, when he uttered his first word which was ‘pain’
