While she's best known for her work in the United States of America, Abdo was born and bred in Manchester. She studied at the Christ the King School and Withington Girls' School before moving to Spain at the age of 17 while learning the language and taking her high school diploma.

She returned to her hometown soon after and completed a degree in European languages at the University of Salford, while also studying translation and interpreting at the University of Malaga. Despite becoming a huge name in the world of sports journalism, Abdo has previously admitted that she struggled to find opportunities in the world of work as a youngster - citing how she was unable to hold down a job at beloved high-street bakery, Greggs.
