Kasper Schmeichel has Celtic heartbreak history as Joe Hart Falkirk transfer pivot explained
Kasper Schmeichel broke Celtic hearts by saving a famous penalty for Falkirk 17 years ago and now he's set to sign for the champions.
The Danish veteran is on the brink of linking up with Brendan Rodgers once again after his deal with Anderlecht expired and has agreed a one-year contract with the Hoops, Record Sport understands. However, the Leicester City Premier League winner is no stranger to Scottish football after a loan spell at Falkirk in 2007 for six months from Manchester City. Schmeichel only played against Celtic once competitively but produced an incredible performance on March 18, 2007 when he helped the Bairns shock Gordon Strachan's side.
Falkirk had lost eight games in a row heading into the game, but a goal from midfielder Steven Thompson and a penalty save from Schmeichel from Craig Beattie earned the hosts the three points, which saw both teams reduced to ten men after Stephen McManus and Carl Finnigan were sent off. The defeat was Celtic's third in a row and was the first time in 13 years they had been defeated for three successive matches, after previously losing to AC Milan and Rangers.
Ironically, Falkirk only managed to secure the son of former Manchester United and Manchester City legend Peter on loan from the current English champions after failing in a bid to get another City keeper on loan....recently retired former Celtic hero Joe Hart.
Then-Falkirk head of football operations George Craig later explained: "It was a massive coup for Falkirk to bring someone like Schmeichel to the club. Kasper was a lovely lad and a larger than life personality and when he won the English title with Leicester I was absolutely delighted for him.
