Kalvin Phillips looks to complete January move as Man City fly home

Kalvin Phillips is looking to seal a move away from Manchester City this week as West Ham attempt to complete a loan deal.

Phillips wants more regular game time in order to protect his place in the England squad for this summer's European Championship, having barely featured again under Pep Guardiola. City are happy to let him go providing they are financially compensated for the loan, and after Newcastle and Juventus were put off by the initial demands West Ham are increasingly confident of negotiating a compromise with City.

Pep Guardiola and his squad have been in Abu Dhabi since Thursday on a warm-weather camp during the Premier League winter break and Phillips has been with them for the duration, highlighting his continued commitment to the club despite frustration at a lack of minutes. The midfielder will look to complete the move after flying back with City on Tuesday, although West Ham's FA Cup exit last week means they do not have a weekend game to try and rush a registration through for.

The Blues are not expected to go into the market for a replacement for Phillips, who has only 123 league minutes to his name this season and hasn't played in the competition since a substitute appearance in the 6-1 home win over Bournemouth at the beginning of November.

However, they are still set to sign 19-year-old Argentine midfielder Claudio Echeverri from River Plate; the teenager will be allowed to remain at his club for at least the next six months, with him seen as a signing for the future rather than the present.
