The 35-year-old former Bafana Bafana captain has been a peripheral figure at Amakhosi for a number of seasons although his influence on the team remains as strong as ever.
This campaign he has made 11 starts in all competitions, while playing as back-up to Brandon Peterson as well as Bruce Bvuma, who has only made four appearances this term.
Khune's current deal expires at the end of the season and Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung explained that a number of players will earn new contracts.
"We are in discussions about that," Motaung told IOL.
"We are also talking about other players whose contracts are expiring at the end of the season. At the moment I can't say much as we will make an announcement.
"Those are our experienced players so we're definitely going to engage them, we're focusing more on the current situation that we have and the future and what we're going to be doing."
Chiefs are fourth on the Premiership standings, with 12 wins from 25 matches.
