Crowds to line the streets as star-studded funeral of Paul O'Grady takes place - live updates

The funeral of much loved comedian and presenter Paul O'Grady is to take place today (April 20) in his home village of Aldington in Kent, with mourners invited to line the streets to pay their respects. The 67-year-old died at his home on March 28 "unexpectedly but peacefully" according to his husband, Andre Portasio. It was later confirmed the Lily Savage star died from sudden cardiac arrhythmia.

A private funeral is to take place this afternoon but local residents have reportedly been invited to watch as the funeral procession travels to the icon's final resting place. On a local facebook page, Mr Portasio wrote that "Paul cared a lot about his local community", and therefore he would invite locals to pay tribute to his late husband as the procession travels through the village.

He added that for "public safety Church Road as well as Knoll Hill will be closed on the day of the procession. We kindly ask everyone to respect the family's wishes and maintain social distancing throughout the event. Thank you for your understanding and support during this difficult time."

A private memorial is also planned for Port Lympne Safari Park - where the 67-year-old was a regular visitor, the Mirror reports. Paul was a renowned animal lover and was an ambassador of Battersea Dogs & Cats home, which featured in the ITV show For The Love of Dogs.

The charity have planned a special nod to thank Paul for his contributions as Thursday's private service will feature a guard of honour with dogs from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and an appearance from the Salvation Army Band.
