Jurgen Klopp sharp’s response when probed about pep talk with Steven Gerrard ahead of final day

Jurgen Klopp insists he will not be speaking to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard ahead of Aston Villa’s trip to title rivals Manchester City on Sunday as the Premier League title race comes to a climax.

Klopp’s much-changed side made sure the race will go down to the final game after defeating Southampton 2-1 on Tuesday night. The German coach made wholesale changes to his side, who recovered from 1-0 down to triumph.

It leaves Liverpool a single point behind Manchester City, but with a worse goal difference going into the final day.

Liverpool complete the campaign at home to Wolves, while Gerrard’s Aston Villa travel to The Etihad.

And Klopp is confident Villa – who also host relegation-threatened Burnley on Thursday – have sufficient motivation of their own to pull off a shock result against Pep Guardiola’s men.

“No, of course not,” replied the German, when asked if he planned to speak with former Reds captain Gerrard.

“Stevie prepares now for Burnley, who are fighting for everything. It’s Villa’s last home game.

“They will play that game and then collect the bones and go again on Sunday.

“There’s no reason to talk to him. We all know that Villa wants to win because Villa wants to win – that’s it.”

Joel Matip headed a crucial second-half winner on the south coast with Liverpool still chasing an unprecedented quadruple.

But Matip says the team must not become distracted by events elsewhere.
