Junk Yard Golf founders to open 'intergalactic roller skating venue' in Manchester

A new roller skating venue is set to open in Manchester this spring - from the people behind Junk Yard Golf.

The rink, called Paradise Skate World, is being described as ‘an explosion in space meets Miami beach, fused with an intergalactic fantasy’.

It’ll be opening off Deansgate, in the Great Northern Warehouse complex, in the same unit where Junk Yard Golf was born.

As well as getting its visitors on wheels, there will also be ‘intergalactic cocktails’ as well as Japanese and Mexican bar snacks.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Junk Yard Golf’s Sophie-Larissa Houghton said: “We really love taking old school, retro projects and reinventing them.

“We’re really into the whole LA and Miami beach style, and it’s kind of been something that we’ve always had on our radar, maybe for the past four years or so.

“There’s just nowhere cool where you can go and roller skate and get cool cocktails.”

Added Junk Yard founder Chris Legh: “As competitive socialising has grown, everybody’s reassessing different things.

“So like everyone at one point got a pair of roller skates for a birthday or Christmas as a kid, whether they used them for one day or one year.

“It’s not unfamiliar, especially when you look at the success of ice rinks popping up at Christmas time, we just felt there was something in it.”

The 6000 sq ft venue will be ‘a cocktail bar with a roller skating element’, rather than a spot for pro-roller skaters to bust out their moves.

The wooden sprung floor will surround a central bar in the middle, which is accessed over a bridge, with 50 to 60 people skating at any one time.

The food offering is more on the snack end of things than full meals, with the likes of nori popcorn and wasabi prawn tacos,
