Julian Alvarez has a Sergio Aguero-like trait that could be key in Man City's title defence

With over 50 goals in 120 games for River Plate, Julian Alvarez will no doubt prove to be a stellar addition to Manchester City's attack.

News of Alvarez's signing back in January took everyone by surprise, with Pep Guardiola not renowned for his mid-season business. The youngster put pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year deal, although he was immediately loaned back to River.

Having failed to secure a replacement for Sergio Aguero last summer, City fans were eager to learn more about Alvarez once his arrival was confirmed. Joe Hickey, a 17-year-old City fan, was over the moon with the new signing, or should I say, over the Blue Moon? "I'm really excited about Alvarez," he said. "He's coming to City with a lot of goals under his belt already and he wasn't half bad for my Football Manager team last year".

Although many football fans may not have heard of Alvarez before City announced his signing, he's far from an unknown quantity. Aged just 11, he had a month's trial at Spanish giants Real Madrid. However, he was unable to join Los Blancos due to age restrictions in Spain. But just a few years later, he was picked up by his childhood club River Plate - a dream come true for the youngster.

Former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick was keen to sign the young forward prior to his move to City, but United's board refused to grant him his wish. It's clear that City have signed an up-and-coming superstar, with a plethora of clubs having shown an interest in the 22-year-old.
