‘Marsch has already picked him out’ - Leeds player now tipped for new role

Jesse Marsch has already picked Kalvin Phillips out as requiring a more senior role within the Yorkshire club. 

The Leeds Live reporter Beren Cross has claimed the American manager has already picked the 26-year-old midfielder out as a key part of his plans at Elland Road.

This comes after Marsch held his first press conference as the manager of Leeds where he spoke about the England midfielder and his desire to continue Phillips’ development at the Yorkshire club:

“I want to challenge Kalvin Phillips to take a bigger and bigger role within the team and he’s obviously so important, getting him healthy, but also getting him to take a bigger role in the team will be massively important as well,” said Marsch.

The comments from the 48-year-old come amid the midfielder’s expected return from injury with Phillips edging ever closer to a return to the starting XI.

And with the England midfielder’s future being speculated in the January transfer window, Cross had the following to say on Marsch’s comments:

“Phillips will turn 27 in December. He has had limited exposure with the captain’s armband under Marcelo Bielsa, but Marsch has already picked him out as someone in need of a more senior role within this group,” wrote Cross.

The 26-year-old has made a huge rise to stardom over the last couple of years with the Whites where has become a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England side.

And we feel if Leeds are hoping to keep Phillips at Elland Road over the summer, making him captain could be a big step in the right direction of doing so.

It is slightly unusual to have an England regular battling against the threat of relegation in the Premier League and it has already been seen over the January window
