Journalist: Newcastle 'firmly' want 'electric' star, he'd be the fastest at Newcastle

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that a whole host of English clubs will be tracking the progress of Benfica forward Darwin Nunez.

Nunez was close to signing for West Ham United in January but remained at Benfica, where he currently has 21 goals and three assists in 23 Liga Portugal games.

The newfound wealth of Newcastle now puts them high up in the pecking order in terms of signing new talent such as Nunez, who is a young goalscorer, so the fee for him is expected to be high.

With West Ham failing to sign Nunez in January, O’Rourke spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that the Uruguayan will be firmly on the radar of several Premier League clubs in the summer.

He said: “The likes of a Darwin Nunez I’m sure is firmly on the radar, as he is for a host of English clubs having come close to joining West Ham in the January transfer window.”

Interestingly, Nunez has clocked in at a top speed of 36.5 km/h in the Champions League this season, which puts him only behind Antonio Rudiger, Mohamed Salah and Adama Traore in the Premier League this season.

Nunez’s emphatic goalscoring record has meant that Benfica have firmly set their asking price at €80m (£67.9m). In the Portuguese league this season, Nunez has a goal every 74 minutes, has been in SofaScore’s Team of the Week six times and is averaging 2.8 shots per game.

This has led to many pundits praising the striker, including Micah Richards, who called the young striker ‘electric‘ whilst talking on CBS Sports (15/03/22 at 10:10 pm).

Newcastle may have the upper hand over their competitors in terms of finances, and this could be the deciding factor in the future of Nunez if it is a case of who can offer the most money.
