Josip Juranovic reveals Celtic vs Rangers rivalry test to Borna Barisic friendship

They're sworn enemies when it comes to Old Firm derby day. But in Qatar later this year, Josip Juranovic is praying that he and Rangers ace Borna Barisic are World Cup team-mates for Croatia.

The Celtic full-back looks certain to first pick on the right of their defence when the tournament starts in late November. Ibrox left-back Barisic hopes to start on the other side of the pitch and Juranovic hopes it happens.

But for now, all his focus is on Celtic and trying to progress in the Premiership and Champions League. Ahead of Tuesday night’s clash with RB Leipzig - where he’ll face another Croat in Josko Gvardiol - he said: “Borna is a good friend so yes, hopefully we start together at the World Cup - but that's for the future.

“For now, I am Celtic and he is Rangers! We have been out together for meals a few times but with the schedule so busy, there is no time for that now. We have our clubs to play for. When the time comes, though, we can hopefully play on the same side for Croatia and together help our country win matches.

“I love playing for Croatia and to play in the World Cup is a dream. Now, though, my focus is all on Celtic. The standard is high here and it requires all of your concentration if you are to perform at the level you need to be performing at. I believe the Champions League is perfect preparation for the World Cup.

“We are lining up against many players who are internationalists and a good number of them will be going to Qatar. That means you are getting tested on a regular basis and this is a good thing for all footballers because it keeps your performance level high.
