Josh Windass in shock Rangers confession as Sheffield Wednesday star insists Hillsborough crescendo trumps all

Josh Windass experienced some of Scottish football's biggest games while at Rangers, including titanic derbies with Celtic.

But the Englishman believes none of those thrilling encounters from his time in Glasgow compare to his recent outing for Sheffield Wednesday, with one of football's most unbelievable tales unravelling at Hillsborough. Windass joined Rangers in 2016 as Mark Warbuton looked to build an Ibrox side to match Celtic and fans will remember how the winger sparked wild scenes in one of 11 derbies he competed in by scoring the opener as they dared to dream a shock title challenge was on in 2018.

The 29-year-old had a stellar season for the Owls and Darren Moore as they broke records week on week, but their Wembley hopes looked dead in the water after being thumped by Peterborough United in the first leg, only for the turnaround of the century to unfold as the final score at Hillsborough read 5-5 on aggregate before the home side won a dramatic shootout.

Windass didn't feature in one of Rangers most famous shootout wins of the previous few years when Tom Rogic ballooned a penalty over the bar at Hampden in the Scottish Cup semi-final in 2016 to hand Warbuton's men a chance at silverware which was blown by Hibs and David Gray's heroics.

Yet the Englishman says nothing, including those 11 derbies in Scotland he was entrenched in, compare to the atmosphere at Wednesday last week.

He wrote on Instagram: “The best atmosphere I have ever experienced in any football stadium. Truly phenomenal. However, it’s only the semi-final and got one more hurdle to overcome. See you all next week.”
