Jordan Pickford's incredible penalty for England vs Switzerland

England and penalty shootouts is usually never a good mix.

Apart from the Three Lions’ famous triumph over Colombia in the last-16 of the 2018 World Cup, it’s been nothing but heartbreak in the 21st century.

England were beaten on penalties by Portugal in the quarter-finals of both Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup, while Italy defeated them in that manner at Euro 2012.

And the Azzurri inflicted more penalty shootout misery on the nation in the final of Euro 2020.

Misses from Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka sealed England’s fate at Wembley Stadium last summer.

The selection of Saka as a penalty taker has been hotly debated ever since and there are some who believe that Jordan Pickford should have been picked instead.

It might sound a bit crazy, but the Everton goalkeeper can strike a ball better than most and he previously proved that he can deal with spot kick pressure on England duty.

In the 2019 UEFA Nations League third-place play-off, Pickford was handed the responsibility of taking the fifth penalty for his country against Switzerland after a dull 0-0 draw.

Knowing that if he missed it would hand the Swiss a chance to secure victory, the no-nonsense ‘keeper stepped up and produced a penalty worthy of any world-class striker to have played the game.
